Maggie’s Bonnet

This bonnet was worn by Margaret Lawson on her wedding day in 1889. Margaret (Maggie)was born in Adolphustown.

On September 3rd, 1889, Maggie married John Magee, a postmaster. They had 6 children and lived their life in Adolphustown. Maggie passed away March 29, 1939 at 76 years of age.

The bonnet was a popular style of hat worn much earlier in the century. Bonnets were the hat of choice in the 1830’s to 1850’s, though the style of bonnet did not remain the same for more than a few years at a time. It is difficult to find examples of bonnets worn as bridal headpieces. However, it is known that straw bonnets were often wore during the summer months, which could explain why this untraditional hat was worn as the bridal headpiece during this early September wedding.
