The Marshall letters came to us as part of a Tamworth Red Cross collection donated to the Museum this past summer. These letters were written by soldiers from the village of Tamworth, who were serving overseas during the Second World War. Many of these letters are addressed to Pearl E. Marshall, or “Mrs. Manley Marshall,” secretary of the Tamworth Red Cross, who held onto them throughout her life.
This significant collection is still under process, but we wanted to share a sample of these heartfelt letters as part of the Helping Hands exhibit at the museum. The soldiers wrote to thank the women of the Red Cross for their kindness – some letters have humour, some reflect sad and dark days. Regardless of the tone, Letters Home shares a soldier’s story and his life in real time during the chaos of World War Two.
