“The Art of Thrifting: Following the Invisible Thread” with Becky Hinch

In this talk, photographer, artist and lifelong thrifter Becky Hinch explores the invisible thread that connects us through the objects we leave behind, discover and give new life to.

A vintage coat, a handwritten recipe, an old photograph, a well-worn chair-  each carries traces of a life that came before us. We may never know every story, but thrifting gives us the chance to wonder about this, preserve a piece of it, and eventually add a chapter of our own.

Through personal stories of unexpected finds and a love of discovering beauty in the connections they carry, Becky looks at thrifting as more than the hunt for a bargain or the environmental impacts. It can be an act of storytelling, creativity, preservation and connection.

The conversation will explore the people connected to the things, the thrill of uncovering something with a past, and the curious journey objects take as they move from one life to another.

When something is passed on, its story doesn’t necessarily end.  Sometimes, we simply pick up the invisible thread.

Presenter Bio – Becky Hinch:

Becky Hinch is a Canadian photographer, artist and visual storyteller with more than 26 years of experience behind the camera. A graduate of Fanshawe College’s Photography program, her work is rooted in curiosity, connection and the stories found in everyday people, places and objects.

Her creative practice extends beyond photography into community-based art, exhibitions and storytelling projects that explore memory, identity and the ways our lives leave traces behind.

A lifelong thrifter and collector of things with a past, Becky is especially drawn to objects that show evidence of the people who came before us—the handwritten note inside a book, the well-loved piece of furniture, the vintage dress waiting to be worn again. She sees thrifting as another form of storytelling: an invisible thread connecting people who may never meet, through objects that continue to move from one life to the next.

Becky is based in Eastern Ontario, where she continues to create, collect, photograph and follow the stories that catch her attention.
